The 18th president of the United States after graduating from West Point and being a successful military commander in the Civil War. He and the Union army defeated the Confederates leading to the surrender of Robert E. Lee's army at the Appomattox Court House. Grant was in persute of more American trade and influence, which remaining at peace with the rest of the world. He led Radical Republicans in the effort to eliminate Confederate nationalism and slavery, protect African American citizenship and defeat the Ku Klux Klan. By the time he left office, his Reconstruction policies were being undone.
