He threatened to declare war with Britain because of the issue regarding which nation owned Oregon Country but eventually just split it with them. Polk led the nation into victory of the Mexican-American War, and he got about half of Mexico's territory, and finally getting control of California. He oversaw the opening of the U.S. Naval Academy. He only served one term, doing as promised, and died 3 months after the term ended because of cholera.
