Huguenots
- French Protestants that had little toleration under the Edict of Nantes. They fled after the outlawing of Protestantism in 1685.
Edict of Nantes
- Decree that allowed for limited toleration of French Protestants. Was repealed in 1685 which allowed for more migration to North America for Protestants.
coureurs de bois
- French fur-trappers known as the “runners of the wood” or “voyageurs” who set up many posts throughout North America.
voyageurs
- Another name for French fur-trapper.
King William's War
- 1689-1697; was fought between fur-trappers, British settlers, and the Indian allies.
Queen Anne's War
- Second of a series of conflicts between the British and France over control of North America.
War of Jenkins's Ear
- Conflict that occurred between Britain and Spain in the Caribbean and buffer colony.
King George's War
- Another war in America about Austrian Succession which once again turned British colonists against French. Conflict was made after the peace settlement because of no territorial realignment.
Acadians
- Descendants from France that were living in Nova Scotia, and were taken over and scattered South by the British in 1755.
French and Indian War
- War between the British and France in North America that lasted for 9 years and resulted in the French being pushed out of North American mainland.
Albany Congress
- A congress in the colonies that was brought together to create colonial unity and get support from the Iroquois in the war against the French.
regulars
- Professionally trained troops which were used by the British generals in the French and Indian War.
Quebec, Battle of
- Battle fought on the outskirts of Quebec, which was a victory for the British against French. The surrender that occurred marked the end of French rule in North America.
Pontiac's Uprising
- A bloody campaign that occurred in attempts to get British out of Ohio Country, but the British fought back by passing out blankets that were infected with smallpox.
Proclamation of 1763
- Document issued by Parliament because of Pontiac’s uprising which said that there was no settlement beyond the Appalachians allowed.
