The first women in the U.S. to receive a medical degree and was the first women on the UK Medical Register. She was a pioneer in promoting education for women in the medical field. She was a social and moral reformer in the U.S. and Britain. Her Sister Emily, was the 3rd women to get a medical degree in the U.S. Was born to a sugar refiner in England and moved to America with her family at age 11. Her father started the Congress Sugar Refinery in New York. She was encouraged to study medicine after her friend was dying of a painful disease. Blackwell fell down a flight of stairs leaving her mentally and physically disabled and later died in her home.
