Committee on Public Information
- Government office during WWI as Chairman George Creel that was dedicated to getting Americans' support of the war.
Espionage Act
- Prohibited interference with the draft and any other acts of national disloyalty. Strengthened the Sedition Act.
Schenck v. United States
- Upheld the Espionage and Sedition Acts saying that freedom of speech could be curtailed if it was seen as a clear and present danger to the nation.
War Industries Board
- Headed by Bernard Baruch that coordinated industrial production during WWI which increased 20% during the war.
National War Labor Board
- Chaired by Taft and looked to prevent labor disputes by encouraging high wages and 8 hour work days.
Industrial Workers of the World
- Wanted to build one big union and supported industrial sabotage in defense of that goal. Good for the Allied cause.
Nineteenth Amendment
- Gave women the right to vote after support from organizations like the National America Woman Suffrage Association.
Sheppard-Towner Maternity Act
- Appealed to new women voters under the nineteenth amendment by providing federally funding instruction in maternal and infant health care.
Chateau-Thierry, Battle of
- First major engagement of American troops in the Allied forces of WWI. Was fresh image to the French soldiers.
Meuse-Argonne offensive
- American troops led by John J. Pershing in an effort to cut the German railroad lines that were supplying the western front helping the Allies.
League of Nations
- World organization of national governments and was established by the Treaty of Versailles working to help with peaceful international cooperation.
irreconcilables
- Group of militant isolationists that were against the League of Nations and played a major role in making it not happen in America even though it was already established in the Treaty of Versailles.
Versailles, Treaty of
- Concluded WWI which secured peace but made sharp terms on Germany. Used a few of the Fourteen Points and established the League of Nations but was never ratified by Senate because of irreconcilables.
