- Lowered tariffs allowing for trade and increased Treasury receipts.

California Bear Flag Republic
- Created by local settlers that revolted against Mexico; it was abandoned when news of the war reached them.

- An American victory against Mexico that helped General Zachary Taylor secure his success in the presidential election of 1848
Guadalupe Hidalgo, Treaty of
- Ended the war between the U.S. and Mexico giving America land from west of Texas up to Oregon and Mexico got $18.25 million and assumed debts.
Conscience Whigs
- Whigs who were against slavery and they wanted to prevent he annexation of Texas as a slave state.
Wilmot Proviso
- An amendment that prohibited slavery from going to the land acquired from Mexico; it failed causing a lot of tension between the north and south on slavery.
