Bill of Rights
- The First ten amendments in the Constitution giving key rights to individuals and states the power that isn't delegated or prohibited by the Constitution.
Judiciary Act of 1789
- Established the Supreme Court, federal district and circuit courts, and the office for attorney general.

- The payments of debts at face value.

- The transferring of a debt from one party to another.
tariff
- A tax put on imports.
excise tax
- A tax put on things that were produced domestically, like the tax on whiskey.
Bank of the United States
- Chartered by Congress, it printed paper money and was a depository for Treasury funds.
Whiskey Rebellion
- An uprising of whiskey distillers in southwestern Pennsylvania who were against the excise tax on whiskey; Washington put down the rebellion with militia.
Reign of Terror
- A 10 month period of repression when 40,000 people were killed as enemies of the French Revolution.
Neutrality Proclamation
- Stated that America was formal neutral in the conflict between England and France.
Fallen Timbers, Battle of
- Battle between Miami confederacy and the U.S. army and because the British wouldn't house the routed Indians, it forced a settlement with the United States.
Greenville, Treaty of
- Stated that Miami Confederacy agreed to give the territory in the Old Northwest to the U.S. as a trade for cash payment, hunting rights, and formal recognition of their sovereign status.
Jay's Treaty
- Made in an effort to avoid war with Britain. Britain promised to take outposts off of U.S. soil and pay for the damage they caused to American vessels as a trade for the U.S. having to repay pre-Revolutionary war debts and they had to abide by Britain's tough trading rules with France.
Pinckney's Treaty
- Between the U.S. and Spain giving Americans free navigation of the Mississippi and the territory that was fought for in Florida.
Farewell Address
- George Washington's address after he resigned warning of "permanent alliances" with other nations saying that the new nation should forge alliances for the time being.
XYZ Affair
- Conflict between France and the U.S. when envoys were asked to pay a heavy price to be able to meet with the French foreign minister.
Convention of 1800
- Agreement to get rid of the treaty between the U.S. and France.
Alien Laws
- Acts from a Federalist Congress that raided the residency requirements for citizenship to 14 years and it gave the president the power to deport dangerous foreigners.
Sedition Act
- An effort to clamp down on Jeffersonian opposition, making anyone who is convicted of defaming government officials or interfering with government policies have the possibility of imprisonment and a big fine.
Virginia and Kentucky resolutions
- Drafted by Jefferson and Madison for Virginia and Kentucky legislatures saying that states were final aribiters of whether the federal government had overstepped their boundaries and they could nullify national legislation if it was unconstitutional.
